I'm THREE FOR THREE on the 10 in 10 challenge!

But seriously, I'm finding things in my WIP folder I had completely forgotten about. It's a good thing to do, like cleaning out the fridge. Only I was a little nutso on the timing of it. But anyhow, I tidied up a fic and got it out, and I'm calling it a success. It might have just molded in a google doc folder for another four months if I hadn't.

A Line in the Sand

And now to eat. Eating is good. XD

Today's fic for the 10 in 10 challenge is a short drabble while I try and pull together my big bang, but it was fun to write. I blame Cortue, because she's now forever burned the desire for lady!AUs into me. Maybe someday it'll be a part of something bigger, but probably not.

Carla Elias stands in front of her father and says, “he needed to be taught respect.”
260 words
Canon levels of violence.

Unrelated: the reality of the big bang deadline is settling in. I'm sitting pretty for it, and mostly I'm excited to finally be posting this sucker soon. There's still some tinkering work to be done (@__@) but I'm getting there. I'm not used to holding on to a fic like this for so long. It'll be very good to have it out there and done with.

Sooooo against my better judgement, I decided to go for Astolat's 10 in 10 challenge. XD Foolish, possibly, but also a good way to chew through some of my WIP folder and maybe get some stuff out.

So here's today's fic

The Strength That I Lack
1,400 words
Rating: Teen

orockthro: John Crichton dancing at a distance. (John Crichton dancing)
\o/ I successfully had a birthday! Low key and lovely, I brought donuts into the office and then [personal profile] pendrecarc came over and we ate cake and watched Many Happy Returns and Baby Blue. For reasons.
And now I'm off to spend the day biking with my folks who are blowing into town to visit.
orockthro: Jack O'Neill holding up a tiny telescope with text saying "I C U." (Jack O'Neill: ICU)
Although I did get 400 words or so put towards the Will Ingram and Grace Hendricks fic that's been clawing at me, I accidentally on purpose wrote a very self indulgent fill from a prompt on the kink meme and it's mostly [personal profile] sarcasticsra 's fault that it became an an actual thing. Yup. I'm still content to blame her entirely. I mean, she's a very good bad influence, let's just say that.

I've got two big (by my standards) POI fic going at the same time here. It's possibly foolish, but it's helped with the painful "must post" impatience to be able to flip over to the other.

POI Big Bang Fic (Yellow Painted Room? 1983? Titles are harddd.)
22,500 words.
This one is really mostly finished, but I need to tighten the seams like wow and maybe chuck in one more scene for good measure.
But oh god this fic ended up being. Like. Really important to me. I hope people like it when it goes up on the 15th.

The Will & Grace Fic (or, the Dead Harold fic. Titles are seriously the worst thing ever.)
3,700 words.
Ug. This fic. This is the ... 7th? time I've completely scrapped and started this one fresh? But it's finally working I think. I still have a long way to go on this one. I don't know how long it will end up being.
Just have to keep plugging at this point, and keep flooding it with all the feelings in the world. Which isn't hard since I have all those feelings in spades.

Yup! That's the update. @_@ Just gotta keep on keeping on and chucking words until they stick.
Man, when I finally post either of these I'm gonna have a drink.

Soooo today was kinda awesome! Not only is it Friday, but I got to meet and hang out with [personal profile] pendrecarc who is absolutely delightful. Through a series of shockingly convenient word choices, we learned that not only do we live in the same city, we work at the same place (abet for different companies). We are a powerfully thrown frisbee away from one another on a near daily basis... if the frisbee was thrown by a giant. But STILL.
And, even better, it turns out that [personal profile] pendrecarc is lovely and delightful and didn't mind as much as she probably should have as we wasted 45 minutes of her work day gushing about POI and fandom at each other.

Today, partially inspired by a half dozen people, I bought a little timer to force myself to be productive. I remember in elementary school my mom bought me a sports timer on a string and looped it around my neck. Here's hoping this has the same effect (50% angry frustration and hair pulling, 50% actually doing shit).

Also today I walked to get the mail at work and for the first time was actually glad I wore the hard hat and safety vest, as the mailbox today was wedged between two cement trucks and a backhoe. Finding the mailbox has been a bit of a game lately, as the construction workers move it as they re-do the curb. XD

That's mah life.
Man, I've kinda forgotten how to blog.

Now to set this timer and write some POI fic. Yessss. I will get this fic. I will.

(I should win some award for most posts in a day after a year + of not posting at all....)

[personal profile] sarcasticsra and I made a community here on DW! It's [community profile] pofinterest_chat
We noticed that although there was a nice fic comm ([community profile] pofinterest_fic ) on DW, there wasn't really a place for folks to just shoot the shit about POI.

SO, if you are a Person of Interest fan we invite you to come check us out! Start a new topic or jump into an existing one, whatever strikes your fancy!

Hope to see you there!

So a thing Cortue and I have been doing is recording a podcast (roughly once a month) that focuses on the fantastic ladies in Person of Interest called Ladies of Interest. We've been posting them on tumblr so this may be old news to ya.
The way we've been structuring it we've been discussing one woman per episode. Then a few weeks later, with input from listeners too, we put together a Roundup post of awesome things fandom has done with the character.
So, it's pretty fun. ;)

Here's what we've got so far!
(Links go to tumblr, where you can listen via soundcloud. There are also download links for the mp3s)

Pendrecarc put together a great Shaw rec list the other day (go read! Although, full disclosure, I'm on the list) and I thought maybe I'd try and put together a rec list too.

The fic that I'm currently writing (and almost. done. with.) ended up being poly, but I adored poly relationships before starting to write it. So here's a very small rec list of POI fic that have poly relationships. I'm hoping this is just the start.

Hedda62: "Phoenix"
"The seed had germinated in Finch's mind, and had been growing since into a strong but twisted plan of action. Certainly he'd had it all thought out when he took down the volume again and slapped it on the desk in front of John.

"Cyrano de Bergerac," he'd said. "English translation. You should read it," and then he'd walked away."
(Notes: Classic Poly fic where Finch sends Reese to date Grace... and then things progress as they usually don't. :) Love, love, love.)

Hedda62: "Halcyon"

"They spoke randomly, as if nothing had changed, but of course their life together had never been immutable or stable; today's alteration sang in a different key, louder and with wilder harmonies, but it was the same old tune. He could hum it in his sleep: the ballad of Harold and John and the walls tumbling down.

John, Harold and Grace try to make things work. Sequel to Phoenix (which those who wish to avoid confusion should read first)."
(Notes: In which there is resolution and even more poly and even more amazing.)

Astolat: "Employment Benefits"
"It happened the first time, if Shaw was completely honest, because Reese was a dick."

(Notes: Shaw/Finch, Finch/Reese, Finch/Reese/Shaw. All with a great big pile of plot in the middle. Fabulous.)

Am I missing a great one? Let me know! :D Moar poly fic is my life goal.

So..... I've neglected this poor sad little DW. But I'm still here!

Person of Interest has gotten me pretty good in the fandom sweet spot, and I've written more for it than... any other fandom. My AO3 is pretty up to date now.
I also actively use tumblr for POI (username Orockthro) but... I was kinda missing the talking/community/actually getting to know people bit that tumblr is not the best at. I found some great people there, but then it's always a struggle to find ways to communicate with them off of tumblr.

SO I'm trying DW again. :)

So my housemate moved out today and my duplex is mine.
That sound?
That's me cackling with joy.

Excuse me while I dance around the kitchen (THAT IS ALL MINE) and drag my desk into the spare room (THAT IS ALL MINE).

I am back!

After pretty much forgetting about dreamwidth while dealing with the whole "school" thing ( ;D ) I have decided to give this account some CPR.
So, hello again dreamwidth!
orockthro: George with glasses and "NERD" written on her forehead (Default)
I've been such a bad dreamwidth/livejournal person lately.  /o\  I've been doing an awesome job actually updating my art blog, but I've fallen behind on just about everything else. *sighs*

But in fandom news, my fic has been posted over on xover_exchange on livejournal!

Created for jedibuttercup:

Title: When Atlantis Rings
Fandoms: Narnia/Stargate Atlantis

Oh look, I'm posting!

As some of you may remember, awhile back I put together an art specific blog: The Attic Artist

The Attic Artist blog is now back up and running after a slight hiatus!  Feel free to head over and check it out if you wish :)  That will be where I post most predominantly and where I put all of my art, art supply reviews, process updates, etc.

Today is my last day of work this summer with the Army Corps of Engineers. I have to turn in my super-high-tech badge and everything. I had kinda hoped I could keep it. XD It has my fingerprints! But, for obvious reasons, I must part ways with it.
Kind of an anticlimactic end to it all - my boss is out of town this week and my cubemate is off on vacation. So here I am, all alone, looking thorugh boxes of microfiche because nobody wants to field me a project on my last week. XD Woo!

Something cool happend, and I felt gleeful the rest of the day.  I helped someone! With my boss gone out of town I am, by sad default, the cultural expert on site. This mostly makes me giggle.  But yesterday I got to be useful! One of the project managers came to me wanting to know how to proceed on a project  because one of the maps had pinged a potential historic building in their project area.  And I got to go "oooh! You should call the SHPO office and have them send you the files for that township and range" :D  I felt important, even though it was a decidedly simple piece of advice. XD I got a rush from it. And that has to be a good sign for my choices in life, right?

In other cool news, I called the MN State Archaeologist to chit-chat about grad school. He's an adjunct prof at the U of MN and was amazingly helpful in understanding what makes a good CRM program and how important they are. :) Plus, I talked on the phone to the freaking State Archaeologist about my ~future.  It was awesome.

All in all, I am feeling wonderful.  I have a direction, a place I want to be, something I want to do with my life, at least for now.  It won't make me rich, but since when have I wanted that? All I want is to someday own a house and be financially independent. I want a two bedroom place so I can have an ~art studio, and I want a porch. That is all I want out of life. :)

Also, packing to go back to school. Crap. *wallows under boxes of shit*

Look, it's Saturday, and I haven't forgotten about fic recing. It's a good day. :3 Also, August, where did you come from? (AHHH!)

I've recently started watching the BBC's Sherlock series, which is... amazing! The 3rd and final part comes out tomorrow and I'm sitting on my hands waiting for it. :D  So in light of that...

I realize the downside of recing all these good fics is that I have to admit how much fanfiction I actually read. XD *giggles*

The Perils of Urban Warfare by Phantomjam
Summary: "The problems of acclimatising to civilian life a.k.a the travails of John, his therapist and Sherlock."
Why this is worth your time: This is just well written, nuff said.  Since the fandom is in its infancy (not Sherlock Holmes fandom, obviously, but this incarnation) it's lovely to see good fic birthed out so quickly.  Mostly I'm just impressed. I wish more fics would include outside people such as Harry and John's therapist.  John and Sherlock are wonderful, but they are only a small part of the Holmes world.  They're great characters as well as great story telling tools. :)  Now if we could get a story with the therapist, Harry, AND Lestrade? I'd be pleased as punch.  Also, army!Watson is totally under appreciated. :(  He invaded Afghanistan and got shot to hell.  Let's not forget that.
* In addition, there appears to now be an audiobook - I haven't listened to it yet but I am looking forward to it. :)
** Warnings: Slash : Holmes/Watson, some gore.

X-Files & Highlander Crossover
China by Torch (my link is dead! :( The author's site appears to have gone under the surf... Anyone know if this is archived anywhere? I have a copy on my hardrive - if anyone wants a read I can email it out.)
Summary: "The door to the attic was locked, of course, but he wasn't going to let that stop him. He worked carefully with a credit card, then muttered about rust and simply shoved, until the lock yielded to him with no more than a complaining squeak. He couldn't find a light switch, but it was daytime and enough sun filtered in through the narrow attic window that he could pick his way easily up the creaking wooden steps, painted a long time ago, now leaving little blue paint chips on the soles of his bare feet."
Why this is worth your time: This is epic and amazing and in character and everything a good crossover should be.  It utilizes everyone, doesn't forget its plot, and is just plain good.  It's slash, but not overplayed and it doesn't (gasp) forget about Scully!  She still plays an important and character-true role.  <3  I really, really wish it was still online :(
* Warnings : Mulder/Methos slash.  Slash doesn't take the front seat, just sorta hangs around. :)

Visions and Revisions by Etherati
Summary: "Stupid Dan breaks his stupid arm. Laurie has to stand in for him - and work with Rorschach - on a critical mission, and reevaluations are made all around."
Why this is worth your time: Laurie! Laurielaurielaurie! Laurie who actually has a character, and opinions, and is worth more than just her really tight latex suit.  It takes place in Etherati's Zombi!Verse (which I will rec later *coughs* probably should have reced that first) but all you really need to know is that Rorschach's body temperature is ... below normal... and he is "metabolically impaired" :D Makes people a mite bit nervous... including Laurie.
* Warnings: Slash. Again. Rorschach/Dan (well within its PG-13 boundaries - in fact, the rating is for the violence and gore that we know and love about the Watchmen world...)

And that's all folks.
Apparently half my favorite fics are slash.  That sneaked up on me without warning. XD Next week I'll vary up the list and throw in some gen and het as well. :D

orockthro: George with glasses and "NERD" written on her forehead (Default)
Because apparently posting a lot is what I do now.
BUT I've decided to start reccing fics that simply need to be shared. :) This will be a Saturday thing as (surprise!) today is Saturday. :D

So let's start this off with some good stuff!

The Not Your Teaching Tool Job by BlackEyedGirl
Summary: "Parker doesn't understand why it has to be more complicated than: "I want to be with you, I just don't want to sleep with you." It's everyone else who has the problem. (Parker as a biromantic asexual)"
Why this fic is worth your time: Because this is asexuality in a nut shell and in well-written Leverage form.  This fic just makes me warm and fuzzy inside every time I read it.  It gets a little repetitive in its message, but that only mirrors the way people actually react to the concept of asexuality.  It's wonderful to see asexuality presented in fandom and the fact that it's a well written fic only makes it more lovely.

Ray of Smoke by Tassos
: "Future fic AU after Fractures. Cycles in the future in the midst of war, Moya stumbles across Earth where awaits politics, paranoia, and a decision that will tear John apart."
Why this fic is worth your time
: Basically everything by Tassos is amazing and deep and gives me shivers, but this fic in particular is well worth your time.  I have a true week spot for outside povs and fics that deal with the harsh reality of the world they are set in, and this fic does all of that.  Earth is not the romanticized haven John remembers, and it's heartbreaking.  Plus, the John + Aeryn + children relationships are just wonderful.  Read this. Warning, it is epic (in length and in content) but well worth it.

Doctor Who/Narnia Crossover
(Yes, you read that right, don't stop reading yet.)

From a World More Full of Weeping by Azar
Summary: "Two people meet who have nothing in common…except a world of loss."
Why this fic is worth your time: The summary doesn't do it justice. This fic is the fix-it that Narnia needs, because (damnit!) Susan just wasn't treated right and it bothers me.  This fic is short and sweet and will make you glow.  And you know it totally happened.  >__> Yup.
