Look, it's Saturday, and I haven't forgotten about fic recing. It's a good day. :3 Also, August, where did you come from? (AHHH!)

I've recently started watching the BBC's Sherlock series, which is... amazing! The 3rd and final part comes out tomorrow and I'm sitting on my hands waiting for it. :D  So in light of that...

I realize the downside of recing all these good fics is that I have to admit how much fanfiction I actually read. XD *giggles*

The Perils of Urban Warfare by Phantomjam
Summary: "The problems of acclimatising to civilian life a.k.a the travails of John, his therapist and Sherlock."
Why this is worth your time: This is just well written, nuff said.  Since the fandom is in its infancy (not Sherlock Holmes fandom, obviously, but this incarnation) it's lovely to see good fic birthed out so quickly.  Mostly I'm just impressed. I wish more fics would include outside people such as Harry and John's therapist.  John and Sherlock are wonderful, but they are only a small part of the Holmes world.  They're great characters as well as great story telling tools. :)  Now if we could get a story with the therapist, Harry, AND Lestrade? I'd be pleased as punch.  Also, army!Watson is totally under appreciated. :(  He invaded Afghanistan and got shot to hell.  Let's not forget that.
* In addition, there appears to now be an audiobook - I haven't listened to it yet but I am looking forward to it. :)
** Warnings: Slash : Holmes/Watson, some gore.

X-Files & Highlander Crossover
China by Torch (my link is dead! :( The author's site appears to have gone under the surf... Anyone know if this is archived anywhere? I have a copy on my hardrive - if anyone wants a read I can email it out.)
Summary: "The door to the attic was locked, of course, but he wasn't going to let that stop him. He worked carefully with a credit card, then muttered about rust and simply shoved, until the lock yielded to him with no more than a complaining squeak. He couldn't find a light switch, but it was daytime and enough sun filtered in through the narrow attic window that he could pick his way easily up the creaking wooden steps, painted a long time ago, now leaving little blue paint chips on the soles of his bare feet."
Why this is worth your time: This is epic and amazing and in character and everything a good crossover should be.  It utilizes everyone, doesn't forget its plot, and is just plain good.  It's slash, but not overplayed and it doesn't (gasp) forget about Scully!  She still plays an important and character-true role.  <3  I really, really wish it was still online :(
* Warnings : Mulder/Methos slash.  Slash doesn't take the front seat, just sorta hangs around. :)

Visions and Revisions by Etherati
Summary: "Stupid Dan breaks his stupid arm. Laurie has to stand in for him - and work with Rorschach - on a critical mission, and reevaluations are made all around."
Why this is worth your time: Laurie! Laurielaurielaurie! Laurie who actually has a character, and opinions, and is worth more than just her really tight latex suit.  It takes place in Etherati's Zombi!Verse (which I will rec later *coughs* probably should have reced that first) but all you really need to know is that Rorschach's body temperature is ... below normal... and he is "metabolically impaired" :D Makes people a mite bit nervous... including Laurie.
* Warnings: Slash. Again. Rorschach/Dan (well within its PG-13 boundaries - in fact, the rating is for the violence and gore that we know and love about the Watchmen world...)

And that's all folks.
Apparently half my favorite fics are slash.  That sneaked up on me without warning. XD Next week I'll vary up the list and throw in some gen and het as well. :D

Because apparently posting a lot is what I do now.
BUT I've decided to start reccing fics that simply need to be shared. :) This will be a Saturday thing as (surprise!) today is Saturday. :D

So let's start this off with some good stuff!

The Not Your Teaching Tool Job by BlackEyedGirl
Summary: "Parker doesn't understand why it has to be more complicated than: "I want to be with you, I just don't want to sleep with you." It's everyone else who has the problem. (Parker as a biromantic asexual)"
Why this fic is worth your time: Because this is asexuality in a nut shell and in well-written Leverage form.  This fic just makes me warm and fuzzy inside every time I read it.  It gets a little repetitive in its message, but that only mirrors the way people actually react to the concept of asexuality.  It's wonderful to see asexuality presented in fandom and the fact that it's a well written fic only makes it more lovely.

Ray of Smoke by Tassos
: "Future fic AU after Fractures. Cycles in the future in the midst of war, Moya stumbles across Earth where awaits politics, paranoia, and a decision that will tear John apart."
Why this fic is worth your time
: Basically everything by Tassos is amazing and deep and gives me shivers, but this fic in particular is well worth your time.  I have a true week spot for outside povs and fics that deal with the harsh reality of the world they are set in, and this fic does all of that.  Earth is not the romanticized haven John remembers, and it's heartbreaking.  Plus, the John + Aeryn + children relationships are just wonderful.  Read this. Warning, it is epic (in length and in content) but well worth it.

Doctor Who/Narnia Crossover
(Yes, you read that right, don't stop reading yet.)

From a World More Full of Weeping by Azar
Summary: "Two people meet who have nothing in common…except a world of loss."
Why this fic is worth your time: The summary doesn't do it justice. This fic is the fix-it that Narnia needs, because (damnit!) Susan just wasn't treated right and it bothers me.  This fic is short and sweet and will make you glow.  And you know it totally happened.  >__> Yup.

I spent the fourth on vacation with my dad in the Black Hills of South Dakota.  It was lovely.  Got covered in poison ivy and managed to somehow not break out in a rash. Booya! Survived 38 river crossings on a trail that was decidedly not just on the north edge.  Spent hours upon delightful hours hunting for rocks on the side of the road with my dad while trying not to find any rattlesnakes instead.  Found a bubblegum agate, a hunk of fine rosequartz, and what (according to the local rock dude) is actually a corpolite. Nifty! Finished two good books. Proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that stuffing wet shoes with newspapers does work as a drying technique. Forgot my camera at home and instead pretended to take pictures with my mind (complete with little shutter sound). Saw a herd of buffalo on the roam and more prairie dogs than was humanly possible to count (these guys went on for miles. No joke.) Learned how to correctly operate a payphone.

And that was my vacation.
And it was fantastic.

The book I started and finished on the trip was Gaiman's The Graveyard Book and it was everything I'd hoped it would be. It's young adult and delightful and riddled with illustrations. :)

I bought two books on the trip that I've started, one is the graphic novel Chew by John Layman and Rob Guillory and the other is Neuromancer by William Gibson.  Neuromancer is a wild ride. It spoon feeds you its world sentence by sentence and you turn the page because you become filled with an absolute need to understand what is going on. I'm not very far in yet, but I can see why it is such an important part of the SciFi genre.   Chew is fantastic in its own weirdness, a story about a man who gets psychic readings off the things he eats (with the exception of beets)... which is great, except for the fact that he's a police officer. It takes place in an alternate, fascist world where the Bird Flu has taken an unexpected turn on the chicken industry and is a wild ride of its own right.
